Outdoor Yoga at Rainton Meadows through all the seasons - barmy or bliss!

Rainton Meadows Wild Yoga instructor, Roy Moor, explains how to enjoy outdoor yoga throughout the seasons in this blog.

What happens when we allow ourselves to simply ‘be present’ in a green space? To take a moment to focus upon the earth on which we stand (or sit), to feel its support and strength, perhaps appreciate the beauty and bounty of all that it gives us (food, water, shelter).

To feel the freshness of each breath as it flows into our body and sense its life sustaining energy which has been cleansed by trees, and plants. To feel the warmth of the sun on your body, to gaze at the expansiveness of the sky, the changing cloud formations and wonder at the vastness of the universe. This is what yoga outdoors gives us. Practising yoga outdoors, all year round opens us up to the miracle and beauty of nature, the grace and ease with which she transitions through the seasons. It helps bring us into an alignment with the rhythm of the natural world and to state of wellbeing that is quite simply a profound act of self-care.

Wild yoga at Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve, Houghton-le-spring, runs virtually all year round and is definitely not about the mat! Whilst there are a few weeks over the summer when the ground is dry enough to be able, for example to practise some mat-based yoga and enjoy a wonderful relaxation lying in a wild flower meadow, most sessions are often all standing. The mantra is ‘dress for the weather’, to which I would add ‘…plus one extra layer!’. Warm, comfortable layers that you can move and stretch in and comfortable footwear that will support you is best (though there is an open invitation to practice barefoot – and many do!).

No previous yoga experience is necessary and modifications to postures are offered so they are accessible for most people.

Just come with a good heart, an open mind, a love for the outdoors and feel the transformation begin!

Through steady, mindful movement, guided breathwork and flowing postures and sequences, you will be able to tap into the energy of the seasons, enjoy the perfect way to de-stress, connect with nature and profoundly increase your feeling of wellbeing.
