About the event

We will be scything some of the coarser grasses and removing sea buckthorn using loppers on the magnesian limestone grassland above Blue House Gill at Blackhall Rocks.

Magnesian limestone grassland is an incredibly rare habitat, mostly restricted to County Durham which supports a number of uncommon species. The work we will be doing will weaken some of the coarser grasses and prevent the rarer wildflower species from being shaded out.

No prior experience needed; all volunteers welcome! If you are new to volunteering or the task, the task leader will show you how to use new tools. There will also be an ongoing explanation about the environmental benefits behind each task.

All tools and any PPE including gloves will be provided on the day. We recommend wearing long sleeves and trousers. Please bring sturdy footwear and appropriate clothes to working all day outside.

We ask that you please bring a packed lunch if staying for the duration of the session. We usually have lunch at around 12pm. Please note, there are no toilet facilities on site.

There will be transport for up to 7 people from Rainton Meadows leaving at 9.15am - please book the ticket type 'with transport' if you would like a space on the minibus. For further parking information please contact Andy: 07484929677 / awadds@durhamwt.co.uk
