About the event

A scythe is a traditional agricultural tool consisting of a long curved blade attached to a handle. Thought to date back to Roman times, it is used to cut grass by hand. Scythes are just one tool that Links with Nature is using to improve 13 greenspaces in the Coalfields.

Although ancient, scythes have many advantages over powered machinery. Learn more about their use in conservation and how you can get involved during this free event.

You will learn how to set up a scythe then how use it to cut grass and scrub. No prior experience required. Correct tool use will be demonstrated. All tools and any PPE, including gloves, will be provided on the day.

Meet outside the Elemore Park visitor centre.

Toilets are available at Elemore Park visitor centre. Walking boots are recommended. All tools and equipment will be provided. The area we are working on is a short walk from the meeting point. If you have any concerns about accessibility on site, please email me at cknox-wilson@durhamwt.co.uk.
