Coastal walk and shark eggcase hunt
Blackhall Rocks & Cross Gill,
Blackhall Rocks Cross Gill Nature Reserve, Blackhall Colliery, TS27 4ATEvent details
About the event
Come and take part in an EGG-citing coastal walk and shark eggcase hunt at Blackhall Rocks! We’ll be looking out for mermaid’s purses (shark and ray eggcases) and other interesting finds along the way!
We will meet at the Blackhall Rocks Beach Car Park at 1pm for a gentle afternoon walk along the coastal paths and clifftops. Our Durham Wildlife Trust guide will tell us all about why our very special coastal grasslands are so unique, show us some of the wildlife that can be found there, and explain how the Coastal Grasslands Reconnected project is helping to restore and protect nature from Nose’s Point in Seaham to Blackhall Rocks.
We will then make our way down to the beach, where we will look for mermaid’s purses (shark and ray eggcases) hidden amongst the strandline. You never know what you might find!
Any empty shark or ray eggcases that we do find will be collected, identified, recorded and reported to The Shark Trust’s Great Eggcase Hunt’s citizen science project. For more info please see: Shark Trust Great Eggcase Hunt
We are working in partnership with Durham County Council to deliver the Species Survival Fund’s Coastal Grasslands Reconnected project. This is one of many upcoming opportunities for families and our local communities to get involved and help us to help nature.
