Help us understand how hedgehogs are faring across our region!

Have you seen a hedgehog recently? Perhaps you've had some visitors to your own garden - or maybe it's been a while since you last saw one of our spiky friends? Either way, please let us know!

Hedgehogs are one of the UK's favourite mammals. The sight of one snuffling through a garden on a summer's evening is a magical experience. But sadly, our hedgehogs are struggling. In 2022, a report on Britain's hedgehogs revealed they have declined by between 30-75% since 2000. Other evidence indicates that their numbers have been falling for much longer than this.

Durham Wildlife Trust is introducing our Hedgehog Survey, to gather as much information as we can about our region's hedgehogs and help to protect them.

Please keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks, and report any sightings via our survey below. Equally, if you don't see any hedgehogs, this is still valuable information to help us keep track of how our hogs are faring - just select the "No hedgehog sightings" pin on the map. Thank you for taking part!
