The 2023 State of Nature Report found that 43% of bird species are at risk of being lost from Great Britain. This is largely due to the intensive way in which we manage our land for farming and the continuing effects of climate change.
Durham Wildlife Trust manages 52 nature reserves - patches of land between the River Tees and River Tyne conserved solely for the protection of local wildlife. These reserves vary in habitats, from wetlands seen below at Low Barns Nature Reserve, to the large expanse of peatland at Cuthbert's Moor Nature Reserve.

By supporting the Trust to protect these habitats, you are also helping to protect a variety of bird species which are currently at risk. This includes curlews, which were added to the Red List on the UK Conservation Status Report in 2015 and black grouse, the sixth most endangered bird in the UK.
