Adventure Schools

Education and Learning: We love exploring wild places such as the fantastic woodlands at Low Barns, the butterfly grasslands at Rainton Meadows, the rocky shore habitat at the coast or the wild areas of your own school grounds. Wherever you are there is always somewhere to have a wonderful adventure with nature.

Adventure Schools will receive:

  • A wild day out at either Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve, Low Barns Nature Reserve, a location that fits your class topic, or at your school with activities linked to the national curriculum delivered by our experienced Education Team
  • As part of your confirmed booking package we will provide all the resources you need to facilitate your day's learning. 

A typical class visit will include:

  • 3 to 4 wildlife learning activities which could include: pond dipping, bug hunting, guided walks, animal and plant identification 
  • A lunch break with access to on site facilities 
  • Access to Wild Play area (Rainton Meadows only)
  • Access to our classrooms
  • On site cafe and gift shop for pocket money treats

Adventure Schools activities offer:

A wide range of facilitated learning and engagement activities aimed at young people, schools and community groups.

  • Animals and their Habitats – Ideal for KS1 & 2. Typical activity to include: pond dip, mini-beast hunt, reserve safari. These very hands-on sessions allow pupils to engage with the environment and discover worlds in the water, under-ground and on land. Full or Half day.
  • Seashore Safari (April to Oct only) – Ideal for KS2. These half-day, fully facilitated rockpooling sessions at Whitburn or Hartlepool Headland, allow attendees to explore the life in our rockpools and learn about the importance of shore habitats.
  • Plants & Trees – Guided, half day sessions to support Year 1, 2 and 3 science and plants learning outcomes. Learn how to identify tree species and their importance to our environment. This includes access to a free, full scheme of lesson plans and classroom resources to compliment the hands-on activities.
  • Rocks Year 3. These half day sessions, delivered from Blackhall Rocks or Seaham Beach, explore the curriculum outcomes linked to KS2 Geology and explain where coal, limestone and fossils come from. Sessions are subject to tide times.
