Black grouse lek

Living Uplands

The Living Uplands project was founded to focus attention on the sixth most endangered bird in the UK, the Black Grouse. The Black Grouse is best known for the males gathering on what is known as a ‘lek’. Males gather on the lek and display their feathers to attract a mate, particularly in April & May.

This time-lapse video shows the energy of the lek on a spring morning. This lek has been carefully protected and nurtured over many years. How many Black Grouse do you think are on this lek? Video courtesy of Tarquin Millington-Drake/Frontiers.
