The quality of woodland and pond habitat at Brinkburn Pond and Meadows in Darlington is being transformed thanks to support from local volunteers and funding from local housebuilder, Homes by Esh.
As Nextdoor Nature Project Manager, it has been great to work with a dedicated group of local volunteers at this wild space. See the before and after photos below.
Compared to only a month ago, with duckweed blanketing the entirety of the water, it is amazing how direct action for nature restoration can have such a positive impact. The hard work by volunteers of skimming the water weekly has already seen an increase in bird abundance at the site and will prevent duckweed building up as silt on the bottom of the pond, slowing down the eutrophication process.
Amazing work by everyone involved and I am looking forward to continuing the connections with the community here as part of Nextdoor Nature.
