About the event
This Seaweed Safari will give you an overview of the diversity of seaweeds we find locally and their ecological importance, as well as take an up-close look at seaweeds within their rockpool microcosm worlds. After our seaweed safari together we’ll split into groups to play a game of seaweed bingo and put into practice what we’ve learnt about seaweeds.
We will meet by a bench on the coastal path along the clifftop at Whitburn Bents, opposite the car park.
Please bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, suncream) and suitable clothing for the environment and weather conditions, including waterproof footwear with good grip as we will be walking over wet rocks and slippery terrain.
There is no scheduled break, but please feel free to bring any food and drink you might like with you.
Please note that the nearest public toilets are located along Seaburn seafront (underneath the restaurant ‘House of Zen’, SR6 8AA) and are a 16 minute walk from the rockpools where our event will take place.
Parking options: Paid parking is available at Whitburn Bents Car Park SR6 7NT, or along the seafront. Car parks can get very busy at the weekend so we recommend arriving early to ensure you are able to find a parking spot.
Public transport options: Several buses go to/from Sunderland city centre. The nearest bus stop to our meeting point is ‘Bents Road-The Bents’ on the A183. From there, it is a 6 minute walk north to the meeting point.
