Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

A preliminary ecological appraisal or PEA is an initial survey which can be carried out on a site to identify potential ecological constraints, both habitats and species. A PEA includes a desk-based study of local ecological records, and a site walkover, mapping habitats present on site and identifying their potential for use by protected species. Often, additional surveys are recommended following a PEA, such as those described in Protected Species Surveys.

Timing

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal can be carried out at any time of year however, spring and summer months are optimal for surveying habitats. It is important to undertake a PEA early in the planning process to identify any potential constraints. Some species have a restricted survey season which can hold up developments if they are not identified early.
