There is a small circular route around the site but due to entrance points and unsurfaced paths this reserve is not accessible for those with limited mobility.

Access and Parking
The reserve is on the south side of the A694, about 2 miles west of Rowlands Gill and 1 mile east of Hamsterley. Parking is available in Durham County Council’s Derwentcote car park (signposted “Derwentcoat Steel Furnace” and “Picnic Area”). Walk west along the main road for about 250m to the reserve entrance. Please note that the wood is not named on OS maps.

Public Transport
Buses are available from Durham to Consett and then from Consett to Hamsterley, Derwentcote Farm on A694. Walk east and High Wood is on the right.

About the reserve

Donated to Durham Wildlife Trust in 1993, the wood is a memorial to the late Harry Collinson, a Derwentside District Officer who died tragically in 1991.

Plant life in this regenerating woodland is rich including common spotted orchids and abundant bluebells in spring attracting several species of butterfly such as small tortoiseshell, meadow brown and large skipper.
