Construction group lends a DIY hand to refurbish bird hide

The bird hide at Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve has been refurbished, thanks to the support of business group Bowmer and Kirkland.

The Trust was delighted to welcome staff from Bowmer and Kirkland along to Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve today (17 September) for a grand re-opening of the on-site bird hide.

The hide, which had fallen into disrepair over years of use, was closed for two weeks during which it was completely refurbished by a team from the construction group. Work included: rendering, a replacement floor, removal of concrete seating and installation of new custom-made furniture, refreshed painting, new windows and frames, plus a freshly painted door and handrail.

Emily Routledge, Head of Development and Communications at Durham Wildlife Trust, said: “The hide at Rainton Meadows is extremely popular with visitors, thanks to the variety of bird species on display across the pond it overlooks. The reserve attracts birders from both the local area and further afield who all enjoy this peaceful space. However, over time the exterior and interior became somewhat faded. We were delighted when Bowmer and Kirkland offered their assistance in giving the space a refurbishment and the results are fantastic.

“Today, we reopened the bird hide by inviting key-holding members and the team from Bowmer and Kirkland along to a special event. It was a fantastic opportunity to express our thanks for the hard work that went into updating the hide and give regular visitors a tour of the revamped building. I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the refurbishment for their hard work and support.”

Laura Brown, Social Value Manager at Bowmer and Kirkland said: “Bowmer and Kirkland are proud to have been involved with the refurbishment of the bird hide. Our staff loved volunteering their skills to the project, not just because it was a great thing to do, but because it also allowed them to appreciate what an amazing resource Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve is, especially as it is on our doorstep. The time spent there has had such a positive impact on our wellbeing that we will definitely be back again soon.”
